One of the easiest and the most common types of lighting arrangements is front lighting. Front lighting denotes illuminating a subject from the front. Though it is one of the easiest and the most used lighting techniques, it is not the best of techniques to be used in all situations. Front lighting is commonly used in portrait photography, landscapes as well as wildlife photography. It is also used in group shots as well as product photography. It is the safest of all techniques that guarantees you a good image, even when you know nothing about arranging lights. The biggest drawback of front lighting is it is flat and boring. Additionally, with front lighting you run the risk of shadows – big black bags under the eyes as well as squinting eyes. Front lighting technique always takes away dimensions. If you need dimension you should opt for sidelighting technique.« Back to Glossary Index
